OB Fellowship

Curriculum Summary
Inpatient

Most of the fellow’s time will be spent on L&D at Lawrence General Hospital. Fellowship activities will be supervised by an advanced OB trained family physician or obstetrician/gynecologist. The fellow will also work closely with family medicine residents and non-OB fellowship trained family medicine faculty. Four weeks a year will be spent at Tufts Medical Center working with Maternal Fetal Medicine faculty and fellows. Two weeks a year will be spent in the Level 2 Nursery at Lawrence General Hospital.

Outpatient

  • 1 – half day per week of High Risk OB clinic
  • Longitudinal experiences in: Maternal Fetal Medicine and Gynecology Clinics
  • 2 – half day sessions per week in family medicine continuity clinic

Call

  • One overnight in-house call each week
  • One Saturday 24 – hour in-house call every 6 weeks

Faculty Development

  • 1-half day session per week with OB fellowship faculty member directed towards addressing fellow learning goals
  • Attendance at ALSO instructor course
  • Participation as ALSO instructor candidate at local ALSO course
  • Attendance at one or two comprehensive OB educational conferences (time and expenses covered)
  • Present weekly case and didactic conferences for family medicine residents and attending

Annual Conferences (budget permitting)

  • ALSO instructor course
  • ALSO Provider course – where you will be evaluated as an instructor candidate
  • AAFP Family Centered Maternity Care Conference
  • Limited OB Ultrasound Course
  • Ante/Intra partum Management at UCSF

Procedure Training

With some minimal variation, you will get around 200-230 c-sections, of which roughly ½ will be as the primary surgeon, roughly 25 – 35 post-partum tubal ligations, 15 – 20 D&C’s, and a variable number of vacuums/ 3rd and 4th degree tear repairs/external cephalic versions. These depend on the number of patients needing them, but generally around 3-10. We also offer some colposcopy training as well as an opportunity to assist in gynecologic surgeries.

Goals of the Fellowship

  • Become competent as a primary surgeon in performing C-sections, postpartum tuba ligation, and D&C’s
  • Provide appropriate outpatient, peripartum and postpartum care for high risk OB patients in an underserved community
  • Increase competency and neonatal resuscitation and newborn care
  • Become more skilled at management of general gynecological problems and procedures
  • Increase knowledge base of the evidence around obstetrics and participate in formal and informal teaching of residents and faculty
  • Become competent at basic ultrasound and gain exposure to advanced OB ultrasound
  • Effectively facilitate working relationships between nurses, attending and residents on labor and delivery.
  • Continue development as a family physician in the outpatient setting
