Fellowship |
| The
Faculty Development Fellowship is a fourth year position that consists of three segments:
clinical, teaching and research. The fellow sees patients in a community health
center and hospital, precepts residents and medical students and participates in
classroom and bedside teaching. With an advisor, s/he plans, implements and
writes a research project. This fellowship should be attractive to those
considering an academic career, especially in the inner city.

Setting The fellowship
is based in the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, a state-of-the art Community Health Center
located just 30 minutes north of Boston, serving a primarily Spanish-speaking population,. GLFHC
is home to the Lawrence Family Medicine Residency, a highly competitive residency dedicated to
training family physicians with a commitment to the underserved. The program enjoys affiliations
with the University of Massachusetts and Tufts University Medical Schools as well as Lawrence
General Hospital. Fellows enjoy a leadership role in resident teaching.

Curriculum
Summary The Lawrence
(Tufts, UMass affiliate) FM residency's faculty development fellowship consists of four segments
- clinical, teaching, communication, and research. The fellow will see patients in a CHC and
hospital, precept residents and students, and participate in evidence-based small- and large-
group teaching. Communication between teacher and learner is developed with mentors during
preceptor, rounding and classroom teaching. With an advisor she/he will plan, implement and
write up a research project.
- Curriculum: EBM/Research methods, Basic Biostatistics, and Adult learning
theory.
- This fellowship should be attractive to those considering an academic career,
especially in the inner city.
- Fellows are credentialed as attending physicians at Lawrence General Hospital.

Outpatient
4—half day sessions per
week in family medicine continuity clinic

Call
- Overnight call is 12x’s in 1st six-months as supernumerary, 12x’s
in 2nd six-months with a back-up advisor..
- Fellows attend with ward teams as teaching attendings on Pedi & OB
2wks each & 4wks of IM including ICU

Faculty
Development
- 1– half day session per week one-to-one w/ fellowship faculty
directed towards addressing fellow’s individual learning goals
- 1—half day per week precepting with a core preceptor supervisor.

Goals of
the Fellowship
|
Teaching
Acquire 1-to-1 proficiency as a preceptor
in the hospital & office, including goal setting & feedback. Small & large group teaching are
part of the curriculum.

Research
Explore a possible research career
via experiences surrounding a 1yr project. Design & implementation, IRB application, data
collection & analysis, writing & presenting results.

Clinical
Continue development as a family
physician in the outpatient setting & inpatient setting. Preception and discussion of
cases available at all times.
|
Communication
Teaching, research & clinical facets
of faculty development are dependent on precise, clear communication. The fellows’ teaching,
presentations, proposals and manuscripts will be reviewed by faculty for clarity and
organization.
